WOW. Just when I think I have a handle on this show, it throws me for a huge loop. That’s not to say that I’m that surprised by how things played out, especially ending the show with the explosion. That’s classic LOST.
As far as my predictions went: (1)Jin and Sun were not reunited, which I thought was a given. (2)Someone important most decidedly DID die because Jacob was shown to be incredibly important. And I totally called the Juliet thing. She was going to die from those injuries, and while it’s true that she might not be dead anymore depending on what the explosion made happen, the point is we had a Juliet death scene, complete with Sawyer’s breakdown. (3)The survivors DID NOT end up in the same time period (though perhaps the explosion caused that to happen). (4)And while I didn’t think Locke (or fake Locke rather) would ORDER Ben to kill Jacob, I was right in who the killer would be. (5)Jack talking to his Dad didn’t happen (except in flashback), but now that we know (a tentative word) it was just the smoke monster posing as him, that’s probably a good thing.
So here are some questions posed by the finale:
Is Jacob a god?
Everyone (including myself) was jumping all over the whole “Locke is Jesus” thing when he seemed to have returned from the dead. But lo and behold, it was someone (or something) posing as him. Meanwhile, the mysterious Jacob who we thought was evil now seems to be good. Perhaps HE is the Jesus figure. He’s been murdered which will set off a major war, but he’ll return to make things right in the end.
Who’s going to fight in this war?
That’s what I’m confused about. The people carrying Locke’s body seem to be on Jacob’s side. After showing the Others that Locke isn’t Locke, it would seem that they’d be on that side too. And if the other survivors make it back to this time period, wouldn’t they be on this side as well?
So who are they going to fight AGAINST? Just the smoke monster? Or maybe Ben joins the evil side once and for all? (I mean, what else does he have going on for him?)
IS it the smoke monster?
We know the smoke monster has been around for a long time. We know that it appeared to Ben in the form of his dead daughter. We know that fake Locke wasn’t there when this happened. It stands to reason that fake Locke is the smoke monster. Probably Christian Shepard too.
What is the loophole?
Now the question remains whether this person/entity that has wanted to kill Jacob for so long was a human when we saw him during the intro. I think it was just in human form.
Regardless, the loophole can’t be being in the form of a human. And it can’t be posing as a dead person, otherwise it could have killed Jacob earlier while posing as Christian. I think that getting Ben to do it instead of doing it himself is the loophole.
Why does Jack want to undo everything?
It seemed that he had finally gotten to a point where he agreed with Locke that they were never supposed to leave and that the island had brought them there for a reason. Does he really think the reason it brought them there was just so they could eventually undo having ever been there?
The only way that makes sense is if they go back to before but still remember everything that’s happened. That is, they learn from the experience. Still, that will really suck for Kate. Plus, Jin likely can’t get Sun pregnant off the island.
How did the fall not kill Juliet?
Seriously? I had to sit there in stunned silence when she fell only to be subjected to her still being alive. That fall was long enough to kill someone under normal circumstances, much less when being dragged down by a magnet. Plus, how did she not crash into all of the stuff that was already down there?
How can a rock set off the bomb when the fall didn’t?
Once again, the bomb was not only falling but being PULLED down. Dumb.
What will next season hold?
Obviously that’s pretty much impossible to answer. I think we’ll see the repercussions of Jacob’s murder. In regards to our friends in the 70’s…who knows. It seems clear that the bomb isn’t what caused the incident as it was happening before the bomb went off. But did the bomb go off too late to stop it? And what about Richard telling Locke that he watched them all die?
2010 can’t get here quickly enough.
